Pacific Coast Highway: Mile 3

The Landsby scores an extra J00ster star for having a resident hipster kiwi. Making skinny legs, nocturnal hours, and all-organic diets cool long before Williamsburg came along.

Speaking of flightless two-legged critters, OstrichLand USA is where you learn very quickly that ostriches are remarkably vicious creatures. Should have heeded the warning signs that says use two hands to hold the feed platter.

Stay away from the fence son, these aren't your cuddly national mascot.

They sure do look cute when they're little. But what's the Terrible Twos in ostrich years?

For reasons that scientists have never managed to figure out, the monarch butterflies choose to winter every year at one particular grove of Eucalyptus trees at Pismo Beach. Uhm, you don't need a PhD in entomology to figure that one out: it's 70 degrees here and back home it's minus 20. Duh.

Avila Beach is one of those increasingly rare beach towns that's somehow managed to keep the condo developers away and an aw-shucks surfer attitude alive. The only way to walk the main street is shoe-less with a milkshake in hand. So kind of like Palmy really.

Actually nothing like Palmy. Look, see that yellow orb up there, that's known in these parts as the sun. Pretty nifty eh?

It's remarkable how quickly you forget about the tax burden once you hit the sand. SALT? That's all that stuff in the ocean, right? Or that artisanal pink stuff they ground over my avo toast this morning?

The latest on the long list of Big Bay competitors. So far no sign of any garages, so it's already been found wanting.

Is fish and chips still allowed or has the nanny state banned deep frying too?

Dad does this deliciously golden battered morsel come with the Monterrey Bay Aquarium sustainable seafood stamp? No kid, but it does come with the Fishtown stamp of approval.

So apparently the East River is frozen over back home. Which begs the question, why exactly is it home again?

Morro Bay, one less r and you could find yourself at a Pak n' Save checkout.

The little town of Cambria isn't so much a town as it is an epic boardwalk and an eclectic collection of retro beach side motels and clam bars.

Needless to say, one of those motels has jumped on the hipster bandwagon.

Just in case you want to toast some whales with your single-origin cold brew.

Seconds before Ryan dumps a shoe full of sand in the middle of all that retro-chic.

Which way to the beach? Just turn left kid. That's the story of Cali after all.

Well there's no way you can argue it's not lights out time kiddo.

If you find an oyster make sure you bag it, those west coast oysters are fetching a pretty penny out east.

Turns out you were right after all, it's not lights out, it's lights on! All 500,000 of them.

Must be LEDs, no way they'd allow those glacier-killing, Trump-voting, Big Coal-fueled ordinary lights out here.

Pacific Coast Highway: Mile 2

It's minus 20 back home but barely even autumn on the Best Coast. The bucolic Santa Ynez Valley is only a short hop from the glitzy coastal enclaves of Santa Barbara county but might as well be a different planet.

Dad, these horsies seem to be 53rd percentile for height too.

Cruisin', Los Olivos style.

Don't auction them all off as retro-hipster yard pieces just yet, that Model 3 seems to be mighty slow out of the blocks.

Hashtag organic seems a bit superfluous in these parts. One suspects the good townsfolk of Los Olivos would come charging, reclaimed vintage pitchforks and celebrity litigators drawn, long before the first drop of Roundup got anywhere near the vines lining their Range Rovers' driveways.

Dad, does that water tower contain some raw water? Son, there's plenty of raw water out there if you know where to look. There's a couple of tanks worth right off Moonshine Valley Road for example.

Dad, are you sure this is the lavender farm, or did we take that turn to Death Valley?

Sunstone Vineyards knows just how to move wine into the Millennial age. Forget stuffy cellars and pompous tasting notes, I detect subtle hints of cornhole with a smooth bocce finish.

No risk of drought in these parts.

A member of the ultra-exclusive Kappa Gamma Fergusson sorority demonstrates the superior flight dynamics of Manawatu corn bags. Thank AgHort for that, knew those four year food science degrees were good for something.

Wining and dining, West Coast style.

Remember, no drinking and driving Mommy. Oh that's right, no driving Mommy.

If a Motel 6 can be reincarnated as The Landsby then all things are possible.

Mommy, is this the Island of Sodor? No Ryan, that got shut down because Thomas and Gordon were being paid more than what's her name, that pink engine that appeared as a walk-on extra in half a scene.

If this is a kale smoothie sign me up!

Must be nice to live in a state where the fire pits are for ambiance only and not for, you know, protecting from frostbite. On the other hand, they carry a laundry list of Prop 1, 2, ..., N warnings for all the gruesome diseases you may or may not get should you encounter the indeterminate substances that may or may not be present.

Dad, for the price of that wine you could have got a room with HBO and a hot tub at the predecessor motel.

You realize the deep freeze back east is driving the cost of this fire up by 1000%?
